Peace Quilt

This quilt was designed and sewn by

the children, teachers and parents of

Channing Unitarian Universalist Church

of Rockland, Massachusetts

We began the quilt as part of a district wide project called PEACE WAVE, sponsored by the Ballou Channing Religious Education Committee.  Just as peace begins within, and then spreads like a wave in the mighty ocean, it was our hope to send this quilt out into the world, bringing with it the messages of beauty, hope and peace.

On May 12th, 2007, UU families and friends from all over the district gathered at the

Cedar Hill Retreat Center in Duxbury to celebrate the culmination of this year long Peace project.

We decided to raffle off the quilt to raise money for the Religious Education program at Channing Church.  Over the summer, the quilt traveled to The Hanson Holistic Center, Equal Exchange in West Bridgewater, and Salvage Chic Antiques in Bryantville.  Our thanks to owners Leeann Trigler and Christine Pearl for their generosity.  Then the quilt took First Prize at the Marshfield Agricultural Fair in August!  In the Fall, we sold raffle tickets at the Haven For Healing Women’s Retreat at Camp Kiwani in Hanson, the Channing Church Yard Sale, and our Holiday Fair.

Thank you to everyone who bought raffle tickets and supported this very special project!!

WINNER OF THE PEACE QUILT RAFFLE!!!

This long awaited drawing took place at the close of the Holiday Fair in November.  Sara was the lucky winner, thanks to the nimble choice fingers of her little sister Izzy!  Sara was one of many children who worked on the quilt last year along with teachers  and parent volunteers.  We all waited, holding our breath, as Izzy slowly and carefully picked a ticket from the can.  What a thrill it was to read Sara’s name!  What luck for one of our very own Channing children to have the honor of taking home this labor of love!

But Sara had other plans for the quilt.  The next day during Sunday services, she surprised this teacher by giving the quilt to me!!  I was to say the least, overwhelmed with emotion.

Thank you Sara for your very sweet and generous gift!  My heart swells with pride and joy!

What a beautiful act of thoughtfulness and loving kindness.  Next month, the quilt will return to Channing Church and will become a permanent addition to our Children’s Chapel…

a lasting symbol of our Peace Project and our expression of hope for Peace in the world.

With love,  Becky Paul

Channing Church Affirmation

Love is the doctrine of this church
The quest for truth is its sacrament
And service is its prayer.
To dwell together in peace;
To seek knowledge in Freedom;
To serve humanity in fellowship;
To the end that all souls shall grow
Into harmony with the divine.
Thus do we covenant with each other
And with God.
